Godfrey To Consider Extending Pause On Data Center Applications

GODFREY – Godfrey officials may soon place another six-month pause on applications to build a data center in the village.

A resolution extending a moratorium on the acceptance of data center applications pending further study appears on the Village Board agenda for Aug. 4, 2026. Trustees previously passed a 180-day moratorium on data center applications on Jan. 20, 2026, which has since expired.

“The Village of Godfrey is committed to protecting the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents while promoting orderly and sustainable development,” the resolution states. “Data centers are a rapidly evolving land use with potential impacts related to infrastructure capacity, utilities, energy consumption, water usage, environmental considerations, land use compatibility, and long-term community planning.”

The resolution would direct the village’s Building and Zoning Department not to accept, process, or review any applications, petitions, permits, or requests related to the construction or establishment of data centers in Godfrey over the next six months.

If approved, the 180-day extension would give village officials more time to determine whether Village Code amendments or zoning regulations are necessary to address the potential impacts of data centers. The extended moratorium would then expire on Jan. 31, 2027.
