Alton Man Detained After Allegedly Threatening Arson At Madison County Courthouse
EDWARDSVILLE – An Alton resident faces a Class X felony after allegedly threatening to set fire to the Madison County Courthouse in Edwardsville.
39-year-old Christopher O. Clark of Alton was charged on Aug. 27, 2026 with a Class X felony count of making a terrorist threat.

The day prior on Aug. 26, 2026, Clark allegedly made a statement to Madison County Sheriff’s deputies that he “intended to burn down the courthouse in the presence of multiple residents and employees engaging in lawful courthouse business,” charging documents state.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to deny Clark’s pretrial release from custody. According to the petition, Clark arrived at the courthouse “without lawful business.”
“When he was informed of an administrative order limiting his access only to lawful business, he told security staff, in the presence of multiple civilians and employees that he intended to burn down the courthouse,” the petition states. “He was arrested and continued to resist.”
At the time of this offense, the petition notes Clark was already out on pretrial release from a prior Madison County case filed earlier this year. In that case, he was charged on June 18, 2026 with one count each of aggravated battery of an Edwardsville Police officer (a Class 2 felony) and resisting a peace officer (a Class A misdemeanor).
Clark currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
