Yang allegedly brought 468 pounds of methamphetamine from California into Illinois for the purpose of delivering the substance on Sept. 14, 2026. He is also accused of pushing an Illinois State Police trooper to the ground and resisting arrest by fleeing on foot from the officer.

The charges stem from a traffic stop conducted by an Illinois State Police trooper on Interstate 70 near the Pierron area on Sept. 14, 2026. A petition to deny Yang’s pretrial release was filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, stating he was identified as the driver of a vehicle stopped for traffic infractions.

“During the stop, the officer became suspicious of criminal activity and conducted a K9 sniff, indicating positive,” the petition states. “Search of the vehicle revealed five large duffle bags, containing a crystalline substance. Officer moved to arrest defendant, who then fled on foot, and was apprehended nearby.”

The petition states a field test showed the substance to be 212,550 grams, or 468 pounds, of methamphetamine. Receipts found in the vehicle also reportedly indicated “a clear path of travel from California.”

“Defendant was previously charged with drug trafficking in Ohio and fled that jurisdiction prior to trial, forfeiting his bond,” the petition states. “He has been in warrant status, evading justice since June 2010.”

Shaowen Sun, 67, of Union City, Calif., was charged with methamphetamine trafficking and unlawful possession with the intent to deliver methamphetamine, both Class X felonies, in a connected case also filed on Sept. 16, 2026.

Sun is also accused of bringing 468 pounds of methamphetamine from California into Illinois with the intent to deliver on Sept. 14, 2026.

The Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois presented both cases against Yang and Sun to Madison County prosecutors. Yang currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail, while Sun was ordered released pending trial.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
