JERSEY - Jersey Community High School Spanish students honored loved ones who have died with altars, kites and traditional bread this week during a Day of the Dead celebration in Jersey Community Unit School District No. 100.
Students created ofrendas, or altars, made and flew barriletes, or kites, baked pan de muerto, or bread of the dead, and more. The activities marked a week focused on Hispanic culture and remembrance.
Day of the Dead, known in Spanish as Día de los Muertos, is traditionally celebrated Nov. 1 and 2. Depending on the locality, observances may also include other dates, such as Oct. 31 or Nov. 6.
The multi-day Spanish holiday brings family and friends together to pay respects to and remember loved ones who have died.
