SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias kicked off the next phase of the Driving Change campaign by visiting Salem Baptist Church of Chicago, Sweet Holy Spirit Church, and Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday to address congregates about skyrocketing auto insurance rates. The Secretary's focus, at the services, was on asking parishioners to share their stories about unfair and discriminatory ratemaking practices employed by auto insurance companies. These stories will help drive real change in the next legislative session, as Giannoulias plans to introduce legislation to fix this inequity.
The Driving Change campaign is aimed at preventing insurance companies from using socio-economic data – such as credit scores, zip codes and age – to charge Illinoisans higher auto insurance rates.

The Secretary of State’s office recently capped off a series of regionally based virtual town halls to gather local input and help inform legislation for members of the General Assembly to consider.
“After a successful virtual town hall series, where our office heard from over 900 Illinoisans, our office wanted to continue to build momentum by launching a faith-based focused outreach,” said Giannoulias. “That’s why we went to three Churches today to meet with faith leaders and their congregants and urge them to use their voice and share their story. Equipped with your voices and real-life challenges, we’ll take this fight to the state legislature. Together, we can push for meaningful reform that brings fairness, justice and affordability to auto insurance in Illinois.”
Alexi Giannoulias was sworn into office as Illinois’ 38th Secretary of State on January 9, 2023. In this capacity, he also serves as the State Librarian and State Archivist. Giannoulias is committed to transforming the office’s antiquated IT infrastructure to modernize operations and improve customer service for all Illinoisans.
