EDWARDSVILLE - Senior swimmer Alyssa Albertyn had emerged as one of the top girls' swimmers in the Metro-East this season and qualified for two events - the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle - at the state meet by winning both races at the IHSA girls swimming sectional meet on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center in Edwardsville.
Albertyn's winning times were 1:49.75 in the 200 freestyle and 50.50 seconds in the 100 freestyle, and will look to contend in the races at the state meet, which will have its preliminaries Nov. 14, 2025, at the FHC Natatorium in Westmont.
In an interview conducted between her winning races, Albertyn gave credit to a higher power that helped her become a very good swimmer.
"I'm feeling really good about my race right now," Albertyn said. "I'm really tired, but I still have the 100 (freestyle). I'm just really looking forward to it, and I just give all the glory to God."
Albertyn had a big breakout season this year, marked by many wins in her races, and has swum very well all season. The Panthers, as a team, have enjoyed great success as well, and she credits it to the team's culture.
"I think our success as a team is just our team culture," Albertyn said. "We're very close with one another, and we're just hyping each other behind the blocks. Honestly, the team culture is what drives us to succeed."
Albertyn has concentrated mainly on technique and focus on her races, instead of just going out and swimming, and it's made a big difference in her results.
"I think I swam, honestly, better than I did last year," Albertyn said. "Last year, I was just going and swimming, but this year, I feel like I'm more focused on making sure that I'm racing, and properly, just swimming, making sure my stroke is good."
Of course, she's looking ahead to competing at the state meet.
"Yes, I'm super excited for state," Albertyn said. "I can not wait to compete with all these other amazing swimmers."
In looking back on everything in her time swimming for the Panthers, Albertyn's favorite memory involves something outside the pool with her teammates.
"My favorite memory is definitely all the pasta parties that we had," Albertyn said. "We have them before every meet, and everyone would just come in, and we'd chill, and we have just so much fun, because everyone was looking forward to racing the next day. I love that memory."
