ALTON - Community members who smoke are encouraged to stop by the OSF Moeller Cancer Center for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, community members are invited to OSF Moeller Cancer Center in Alton for lung cancer screenings, door prizes, refreshments and more. You must be between ages 50–80 and a current smoker, or you have quit smoking within the last 15 years, to qualify for the screening, which is covered by most insurances.

“This will be our first screening event that we’re having for Lung Cancer Awareness Month, but we’re hoping to do more of them throughout the year,” said Dana Matesa, R.N. “If you currently smoke, obviously your risk for lung cancer is more prominent. But statistics have shown that within those last 15 years if you’ve quit, you still can be showing effects from smoking. Your lungs heal over time, but in that last 15 years, you should still get your screening.”

You can walk in or register for an appointment by calling 618-433-7607. Matesa will screen you over the phone, then schedule you for an appointment on Nov. 18.

The screening itself is “very quick,” lasting about five minutes. It is a normal CT scan with a lower dose of radiation. Matesa noted that the screening can also pick up on abnormalities on your kidney, liver and thyroid.

Smoking rates in our region are “very high,” she said, which means many people are at a heightened risk of developing lung cancer. The low-dose CT lung cancer screening aims to catch these cancers early.

“The earlier you catch it, the better chance of a more curable outcome,” Matesa added.

Moeller Cancer Center offers lung cancer screenings all year long. You can self-refer or be referred through your primary doctor. But Matesa is excited to offer a screening event, and she hopes to welcome many people who qualify so they can be checked.

Call 618-433-7607 for more information or to schedule an appointment on Nov. 18, 2025. For more information about OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center and their work, visit their official website.
