ALTON - OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center's Imaging Services Department wants you to know they do a lot more than x-rays.

Director of Imaging Services Fred SanSoucie, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), and Manager of Imaging and Diagnostic Cardiology Services Jeff Worman, BS, CNMT, explained that imaging encompasses x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, mammography, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, stress tests, and much more. They noted that St. Anthony’s has cutting-edge technology, and they’re always looking to recruit more students to study radiology.

“We joke that we’re the picture people. We take the pictures,” SanSoucie said. “We’re looking inside without going inside.”

SanSoucie and Worman shared that St. Anthony’s has a new MRI machine with a larger, more comfortable tube, as well as a new CT scanner that can accommodate bariatric patients. These new machines are “just a better experience for the patient” and also lead to quicker scans and results.

They added that the technology is changing “daily,” with better imaging than ever before. For example, the new CT machine allows them to see up to a half-millimeter, meaning they can see individual strands of hair within the image. Similarly, the MRI machine can pick up individual nerves.

Not only is this technology great for diagnostic exams, but it also means patients no longer have to travel to St. Louis for these scans. They can receive quality healthcare in their own community. Additionally, it allows more patients to be seen more quickly.

“That’s decreased our wait times and stuff, too, so we can get more patients in in a timely manner and they don’t have to wait to get their results and their treatment,” Worman said. “That helps dramatically.”

Worman and SanSoucie encourage students to consider a career in radiology. They noted that local colleges like Southwestern Illinois Community College and St. Louis Community College have programs for technicians, or you can go to medical school and specialize in radiology.

Whatever your path is, both men shared that a career in medicine is extremely rewarding. While it takes “a special kind of person” to join the “calling” of healthcare, it can be a powerful job.

“I think, throughout the years, you find something that kind of fills your heart and gives you purpose, and everything else kind of falls together,” SanSoucie said. “They’re great jobs. They make great money, and you can have a really nice life. And you get to help people. You go home at the end of the day knowing you made a difference.”

SanSoucie and Worman encourage community members to visit the official OSF St. Anthony’s website for more information about imaging services and radiology. They also shared that they are happy to talk to students or anyone who wants to know more about pursuing a career in healthcare.
