ALTON — Jim Wigger, the founder of the Great River Road Run, a Thanksgiving weekend tradition in Alton that has lasted 66 years, is being remembered by friends and community members for his lasting impact on local running and youth athletics.

Jim Wigger. The annual race, which began in 1957, was started by Wigger and has become a staple event for runners in the area. Russ Colona, the Great River Road Race director and legendary East Alton-Wood River cross country and track and field coach, and longtime supporter of the race, described Wigger as “a go-getter” and “an amazing man” who inspired many through his dedication and coaching.

Colona said Wigger had a significant influence on his coaching strategies and approach to track and field and cross-country in general.

The Great River Road Run not only celebrates running but also supports youth programs such as the kids’ race track series and the Runner of the Year banquet, which has been held for over two decades.

“It’s a tradition going back 66 years because of Coach Wigger,” Colona said. “We do our best to keep this alive. He was a great man and will always be remembered."

Karen Wilson, an active member of the Alton and Godfrey communities, recalled the friendship between her father, Dale Neudecker, and Wigger. Neudecker, known locally for his work with Pride, Inc. and the Bucket Brigade, was a golfing buddy of Wigger’s and a best friend.

Wilson said her father was proud of Wigger’s accomplishments and supportive of the local track being named in his honor.

“Unfortunately, it is just one person out of his life that isn’t there anymore to share the same stories,” she said.

Wigger died recently at his home in Naperville. He was in his mid-90s and remained physically active into his later years. Neudecker noted that he and Wigger had many enjoyable golf trips together.

As the community prepares for this year’s Great River Road Run, scheduled for Nov. 29, 2025, in Downtown Alton, organizers and participants alike remember Wigger’s legacy of inspiration and commitment to running and youth development in the Alton area.

The Alton Public School Stadium Track is named in Jim Wigger's honor.

Wigger is one area coach who will never be forgotten by the many lives he impacted as a mentor.
