JERSEY 38, CALHOUN-BRUSSELS 32
Jersey edged Calhoun/Brussels 38-32 in a non-conference girls basketball game Thursday night at Calhoun High School. The Lady Warriors (0-2) fought back late but were unable to overcome the Lady Panthers (1-0), who sealed the victory by making four of eight free throws in the final 1:15.
Calhoun/Brussels trailed by as many as 11 points but closed the gap to 32-34 with just over a minute remaining. Despite their efforts, the Lady Warriors could not score again in the closing moments. Jersey capitalized at the free-throw line, extending their lead and securing the win.
Scoring for Calhoun/Brussels were Sadie Kiel with 13 points, Bralyn Lammy 8, Anna Eberlin 5, Layla Longnecker 4, and Kiera Sievers 2. The Lady Warriors made nine two-point field goals, four three-pointers, and converted two of seven free throws while committing 11 fouls.
Jersey’s offense was led by Meredith Gray with 14 points, followed by Breden and Kribs with seven each, Beemer with six, and Goetten and Brunaugh with two points apiece. The Lady Panthers made 10 two-point shots, three three-pointers, and converted nine of 16 free throws while committing seven fouls.
The loss leaves Calhoun/Brussels winless after two games, while Jersey improves to 1-0 on the season.
ATHENS 43, CARLINVILLE 34: Athens rallied from a 23-17 halftime deficit to outscore Carlinville in the second half 26-11 to win at the Carlinville Big House.
Kaitlyn Reels led the Cavaliers with 15 points, while Sylvee Gibbs added seven points.
The Warriors are now 1-1, while Carlinville slips to 0-2.
FATHER MCGIVNEY CATHOLIC 54, GREENVILLE 25: In the consolation bracket of the Columbia Tip-Off Invitational, McGivney bounced back nicely from an opening loss to take control early and defeat Greenville.
Alexa Jones led he way for the Griffins with 12 points, with Zoe Oller adding nine points.
McGivney is now 1-1, while the Comets go to 0-2.
MT. VERNON 47, COLLINSVILLE 31: In the opening round of the Nashville Tip-Off Tournament, Mt. Vernon turned a 16-11 lead into a 31-11 lead with a 15-0 run to defeat Collinsville.
Karley Call led the Kahoks with eight points, while Aubrey Bordoni added seven points.
The Rams open the season at 1-0, while Collinsville goes to 1-1.
GRANITE CITY 57, ELKVILLE ELVERADO 30: In the semifinals of the Sparta Tip-Off Classic, Granite advanced to the final by taking off on a 36-12 halftime lead, shut out Elverado in the third, and went on to the win.
Taliyah Sykes led the Warriors with 19 points, while Tyhlee Simms came up with 16 points.
Granite City is now 2-0, while the Falcons are now 1-1.
MASCOUTAH 51, EAST ST. LOUIS 33: Mascoutah held an early 9-8 lead after the first quarter, then outscored East St. Louis in the final three quarters 42-25 to take the win at home.
Skyler Wood led the Flyers with seven points, while Maulysia Sewell added three points.
The Indians are now 2-0, while East Side opens up at 0-1.
In other games played on Thursday, New Athens defeated Metro-East Lutheran 56-21, Trenton Wesclin won over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Catholic at the Nashville tournament 45-32, Freeburg won at Nashville's tournament over Okawville 61-58, and Belleville East went to 2-0 with a win in the semifinal at Columbia, defeating Waterloo 54-19.
