EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Haine announced Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, that charges of attempted first-degree murder and three additional felonies have been filed against a Granite City man accused of shooting a police officer.
D.J. Marshall, 26, of Granite City, is charged with firing multiple shots at Granite City Police Officer Tyler Timmons on the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 5. Officer Timmons was struck twice but survived and was transported to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment.
At a press conference on Monday, Haine said Officer Timmons is expected to make an excellent recovery.
“We are extremely grateful that Officer Timmons is expected to make an excellent recovery, but make no mistake — this was an attempted murder of a public servant, and we will not tolerate such attacks in Madison County,” Haine said.
Marshall faces one count of attempted first-degree murder and three felony counts: aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, and possession of a weapon by a felon. The aggravated battery charge is a Class X felony punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison. The firearm possession charges carry penalties ranging from 2 to 30 years.
Haine’s office has also filed a petition for pretrial detention, arguing that Marshall should remain in custody while awaiting trial due to posing a threat and being a flight risk. A hearing on the petition has not yet been scheduled.
“Any attack on a police officer is an attack on the safety and stability of our entire community,” Haine added. “Our office has filed the most serious charges supported by the evidence, and we will continue to coordinate closely with law enforcement as this case proceeds.”
