KANSAS CITY, MO. - Stanford and Florida State will meet Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, in the College Cup national championship game after both teams won their semifinal matches Friday night, Dec. 5, 2025. Lily Freer, a midfielder and Alton High School graduate, will play for Stanford in the contest in Kansas City, MO.
The Stanford Cardinal secured a 1-0 victory over ACC rival Duke in a tightly contested defensive battle. Despite numerous scoring chances in the second half from both sides, neither team could find the back of the net until Stanford’s lone goal proved decisive. The Cardinal have reached the College Cup final four for the fourth consecutive year and are seeking their first national title in three attempts.

Florida State defeated TCU 1-0 in the other semifinal, setting up a championship clash with Stanford at 6 p.m. Central time Monday. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
Freer, a freshman midfielder for Stanford, has been a key contributor to the Cardinal’s success this season. Freer was ranked No. 2 on TopDrawerSoccer’s Midseason Top 100 Freshmen list. Before joining Stanford, she captained the Saint Louis Scott Gallagher club team in 2024, leading them to two ECNL National Championships and three Midwest Conference titles with a near-perfect 55-0-4 record from 2021 to 2023. She also played for Alton High early in her career.
Freer’s grandmother, Margaret Freer, expressed excitement ahead of the championship game.
“We are super excited to be here in Kansas City. We are ready, we have so many coming from out of town, a lot from her high school are coming to the game,” Margaret Freer said. “Lily, she is excited about it. She is looking forward to it. Her team has worked very hard and has had a lot of success.”
Freer added that about 30 to 40 people from Alton are attending the national soccer championship game.
“We are hoping for a win," her grandmother said. "The girls deserve it."
Stanford’s roster features an impressive mix of talent, including forwards Jasmine Aikey, redshirt senior Andrea Kitahata, and senior Allie Montoya. The team’s defense is anchored by senior Elise Evans and midfielders like junior Mia Bhuta. Florida State, meanwhile, boasts standout players such as Jordynn Dudley and a strong coaching staff, making for a highly anticipated matchup.
The two teams previously met in October during the regular season, when Stanford edged Florida State 2-1 in Tallahassee with goals from Kitahata and Charlotte Kohler.
Lily is the daughter of Tim and Carrie Freer, area residents.
