Kim currently manages Lake County’s finances and performs duties akin to those of a comptroller, including issuing checks and overseeing fiscal accountability. She is running to become Illinois’ next State Comptroller, aiming to continue the legacy of Susana Mendoza by bringing “strong, independent leadership” to the office.
Kim is the only candidate in the race with direct experience in the core functions of the Comptroller’s office. She noted that “every check issued by Lake County carries her signature.” Under her leadership, the office has become more efficient and responsive. She also negotiated higher interest rates for collector accounts, generating an additional $3 million for local taxing bodies. Additionally, Kim worked with state legislators to reduce mobile home tax penalties, reflecting her belief that “the government should not punish people for being poor.”
Raised by Korean immigrant parents who owned a copier and typewriter repair shop, Kim grew up in a working-class home with a strong emphasis on civic engagement. Her father, a technician and community leader, instilled in her values of hard work, integrity, and service to others.
As a college student and mother, she relied on programs such as WIC, Medicaid, and Head Start to continue her education while working full-time and attending classes part-time for over eight years before earning her degree. She said she remains “committed to protecting” critical public services for all Illinois residents.
Since beginning her public service career in 2013 as a Village Trustee, Kim has also served at the township and county levels. She first ran for office over a local property rights issue involving backyard chickens and continues to live on a small homestead where she and her children raise chickens, grow vegetables, and care for a goat named Tanya.
If elected Illinois State Comptroller, Kim said she plans to continue fiscal oversight and transparency efforts, enforce prevailing wage laws, modernize financial systems, and ensure that “every dollar is tracked with integrity.” She stressed that the office must remain “independent and accountable to the people of Illinois.”
Kim is a wife and mother of four children.
