O'FALLON - Two O’Fallon veterans were recently gifted personally designed and constructed “Unsung Warrior Quilts.”
United States Air Force veteran Marion Rose served her country for 22 years as a charge nurse in many settings, including heart, orthopedics, pediatrics, urology, education and more. She credits the USAF for expanding her education – she earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences and a masters degree in counseling while serving. She also admits that her service changed her into a true patriot! In retirement, Marion still serves by driving friends and neighbors to medical appointments. She and her husband of 52 years, who by the way she met while stationed in Lakenheath, England, have two grown sons, 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Cori Croteau, also a USAF veteran, served 21 years in administration and computer support roles. Her service took her to bases in Louisiana, Arizona, Korea and Germany. She also did two tours in the Pentagon and was in that building on September 11, 2001. After retiring, Cori became active in her children’s Parent Teacher Associations, the O’Fallon Garden Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the O’Fallon High School Marching Panthers and is a member of the Rotary. Recently Cori returned to work at Scott AFB at the 375th Communications Squadron. She and her husband have two children, one a high school senior and the other in college.
The quilts were presented to Marion and Cori by Susan Haas and Rhonda Leach, sisters who are avid quilters and love to honor not only veterans, but ordinary people who are warriors in their own walks of life.
“In the past we presented quilts as part of ‘Quilts of Valor’,” said Rhonda. “We quickly realized that there are many other deserving citizens who haven’t been in a war. This is our way of recognizing them.”
Both sisters are women of deep faith. Susan added “Really, God calls on us to recognize a chosen few. Each quilt is prayed upon during construction and again during gifting.
Marion and Cori received their quilts at a meeting of the Looking Glass Prairie Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution to which they all belong.
