ALTON - Dream Home Charities has completed its 17th year of giving Christmas gifts to families in need across the Riverbend.
Sherry Gilleland, who started the Dream Home Charities Christmas initiative, explained that the organization collects donations to provide toys, clothing, hygiene products and more to families. She expressed her gratitude for the donors and volunteers who made this year possible, and she asked people to continue supporting as the organization hopes to do more throughout the year.
“Every Christmas, I’m reminded that miracles don’t always look like bright lights and ribbons,” Gilleland shared in a Facebook post. “Sometimes they look like tired hands loading boxes, warm smiles during long nights, and people giving even when they have little to spare.”
Gilleland is thankful to the community for their work to support local families. Most of the donations from the Dream Home Charities Christmas drive go to kids who are in the foster care system. Many of these children would not experience the holiday without help from donors and volunteers who give through Dream Home Charities.
While the Christmas drive is ending on a positive note, Gilleland noted that the organization is feeling the economic strain. Dream Home Charities gives gas cards and other donations to people in need throughout the year, but this isn’t possible unless community members come forward to support the nonprofit.
She asked people to consider donating to Dream Home Charities. Monetary donations as well as new toys, clothing items, cleaning supplies, shoes, hats and gloves are all major needs for the organization right now.
“Times are tough for everyone,” she said. “So many are barely keeping up and our charity is feeling the weight too. Our funds are almost gone, and our backup donations are the lowest they have ever been. If we are going to continue helping our community at Christmas and throughout the year — we are in a very real, very urgent need of support.”
