BOYS BASKETBALL
In an opening round game of the Don Mauer Holiday Invitational at Mary Institute-Country Day School in Ladue, Mo., Edwardsville opened its defense of the tournament championship with a 54-35 win over Parkway South of west St. Louis County, while in a result from Monday, Griggsville-Perry defeated Greenfield Northwestern 57-31.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
GRANITE CITY 37, ST. CHARLES, MO. 30: In the opening round of the Duchesne Holiday Hoops Tournament in St. Charles, Mo., Granite City, coming off a third-place finish in the Waterloo Gibault Catholic Candy Cane Classic last week, took a 17-13 lead, then held off a second-half rally by the Pirates to win and advance to the last four.
Jailynn Rae Woods led the Warriors with 19 points, while Tyhlee Simms added on 10 points.
Granite is now 8-3, while St. Charles goes to 2-4.
JERSEY 50, ST. CHARLES, MO., DUCHESNE CATHOLIC: 29: Jersey led all the way through, taking a 22-10 lead at halftime and going on to win over the hosts in the Duchesne Holiday Hoops tournament in St. Charles.
Meredith Gray led the Panthers with 29 points, while Cate Breden added six points.
Jersey is now 6-5, while the Pioneers slip to 1-6. The Panthers and Warriors ace each other in the second semifinal on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
MASCOUTAH INVITATIONAL
In the first round of the Mascoutah Holiday Invitational, University City, Mo. defeated East St. Louis 55-29, while Centralia won over Freeburg 42-40, Breese Mater Dei Catholic got past Belleville West 49-19, and Okawville won over the host Indians 34-23. In the consolation bracket semifinals, the Flyers lost to the Orphans 50-36, while Mascoutah got past the Maroons 59-52.
In the championship bracket quarterfinals, Breese Central defeated the Midgets 60-34. Alton won over the Lions 61-33. The Knights defeated O'Fallon 61-60 and Nashville defeated the Rockets 57-22.
The tournament continues Saturday, with East Side meeting West at 10 a.m. followed by the championship semifinals, with the Redbirds and Cougars clashing at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Hornets meeting Mater Dei at 1 p.m., followed by the fifth place semifinals between the Lions and Mater Dei at 2:30 p.m., and Okawville meeting the Panthers at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday, with the final set for 5:30 p.m.
