ALTON - Virginia Woulfe-Beile is a dedicated environmental advocate and community leader whose passion for sustainability and conservation has made a lasting impact in Illinois. Her journey began as a volunteer with the Sierra Club, where she quickly became an influential figure, leading coalitions and inspiring volunteers in efforts to protect natural resources and promote clean energy.
In her 14-year role as the Three Rivers Project Co-coordinator, Virginia’s diverse background in horticulture and parks and recreation has been invaluable. She helped advance the Project’s mission to educate and advocate for a sustainable future, emphasizing regenerative agriculture and native landscapes. Her commitment to renewable energy is evident through initiatives like “Solar For All,” where she educated homeowners and businesses about solar power benefits.

Virginia’s leadership shone brightly through her visionary 10-year effort to preserve Pere Marquette Park. Under her guidance, historic CCC-era cabins were saved and restored, ensuring these cultural treasures remain for future generations. Her work extended beyond preservation; she monitored air and water quality permits, advocated for ecosystem restoration, and promoted environmental justice through community outreach.
Virginia has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Confluence Conservation Leadership Award, the YWCA Woman of Distinction, the Sierra Club Virginia Ferguson Award, the St. Anne River Steward Award, the United Congregations of Metro East Micah Award, the Sierra Club Virginia Ferguson Award, and was named an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Volunteer of the Year.
She is a graduate of Greenville University and Southwestern Illinois College, holding degrees in liberal arts and horticulture. Virginia’s dedication extends to organizations like Alton Main Street, the YWCA, United Congregations of the MetroEast, and Riverbend Rotary. During her employment, Virginia also served as a trustee for the Village of Godfrey, focusing on long-term planning, transportation, and expanding community services. As chair of the Village’s Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency Committee, she worked tirelessly to reduce greenhouse gases and identify energy savings in municipal operations, fostering a more resilient community.
