EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s women’s basketball team fought hard but fell to Morehead State 54-49 in Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday.

Kiyoko Proctor sparked the offense early with a three-pointer two minutes into the game and another from beyond the arc later in the first quarter, giving SIUE an 8-2 lead. Morehead State led 15-12 after the first quarter. Proctor is an Alton High graduate.
Morehead State tied the game at 12 before taking a narrow lead in the second quarter. Adriana Blazquez hit her first three-pointer of the season to knot the score at 16 midway through the half, but the Eagles regained the lead before halftime on a layup by Marie Sepp. Morehead led 20-18 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Morehead State led SIUE 35-29.
Morehead State maintained its advantage through the second half. Adebukola Akomolafe’s pair of free throws with 2:37 remaining pulled the Cougars within one point, but the Eagles held on for the win.
SIUE was led by Lauren Miller, who scored 13 points. Kiyoko Proctor added 11 points.
The Cougars dropped to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
SIUE will remain at home for its next game against Lindenwood on Jan. 6, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
