Over 240 people have responded to a Facebook event page inviting community members to the candlelight vigil, to be held from 6–8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, in Lincoln Douglas Square in Alton. The organizer, who asked to remain anonymous, believes the community needs to come together.
“This whole thing has kind of had me speechless,” they said. “I was already feeling like the community needs to come together for things like this. I’ve been feeling really heavy emotions about all of this, which I know several of us are. Anyone who’s paying attention probably is."
The organizer pointed out that over 30 people died in ICE custody in 2025, according to ICE statistics. Good’s death, which has inspired protests and vigils across the U.S., is the focus of this upcoming vigil on Jan. 10 in Alton.
“We’re going to come together as a community to mourn what happened with our neighbors,” the organizer added. “I feel like it’s especially hard watching all of it happen on our phone screens and on TV. Just viewing it in our houses can make it feel so isolating and even more terrifying. But giving people the chance to come together and feel what we need to feel about it and see that we’re not alone, that what happened was wrong and we’re being lied to — I just feel like we need that right now. I know I need that right now.”
Community members are invited to attend the vigil and asked to bring their own candles. For more information, visit the official Facebook event page.
