Drone Photos Included: Sinkhole Draining Efforts Underway At Gordon Moore Park

ALTON — SCI Engineering has made significant progress this week in draining a sinkhole that formed beneath the soccer field at Gordon Moore Park, officials said. The collapse, which began on June 26, 2024, occurred above a mine operated by New Frontier Materials beneath the field.

The city of Alton hired SCI Engineering as an independent consultant to investigate the sinkhole. Thomas Casey of SCI is overseeing the study, which involves drilling small test points around the affected area to assess soil pressure, moisture, and strength. Before testing can continue, the company is conducting a dewatering operation to remove water from the sinkhole.

The soccer field was not in use at the time of the collapse, and no injuries were reported. Alton Mayor David Goins expressed optimism about the progress made in the drainage effort and said he looks forward to receiving SCI’s test results to guide future remediation plans.

The city continues to monitor the situation as SCI advances its investigation.
