ALTON — Mayor David Goins read a proclamation on Jan. 8, 2026, saluting Sara McGibany Day in Alton during Alton Main Street’s Annual Appreciation Party held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Post-Commons/Good News Brewing in Alton.
The proclamation recognized McGibany’s nearly two decades of tireless, dedicated service as executive director of Alton Main Street, where she has played a key role in the revitalization of Downtown Alton since December 2006.
Additional honors presented included the Award of Excellence in Historical Preservation to The Wedge Innovation Center, Business of the Year to Bunkhouse Joe’s Coffee, Volunteer of the Year to Melinda Bock, Partner of the Year to Demarco Design, and Best Storefront to Coco + Oak.
The event also featured remarks from speakers, including Chris Miller, Alton City Council Coordinator Beth Bear, artist Charles Mooneyham, and Scot Heathman, CEO of The Wedge.
The proclamation by Mayor Goins highlighted McGibany’s leadership in organizing numerous events and projects that have enhanced the vitality, economic prosperity, and spirit of downtown Alton.
It also noted her civic involvement through service on the board of directors for the Mustard Seed Project and the steering committee of the Upper Alton Association.
Additionally, McGibany has contributed to environmental stewardship through volunteer work with the Sierra Club and participation as a community gardener.
Her commitment to public safety and community development was recognized through involvement in Alton’s Community Policing strategy and the Community Builders Network of St. Louis.
The proclamation further acknowledged McGibany’s cultural contributions as a guitarist and her creative pursuits in fashion design, jewelry making, and painting.
“Sara McGibany is recognized for her outstanding contributions to the City of Alton and its residents, and for her unwavering commitment to making our community a better place to live, work, and thrive,” the proclamation by Mayor Goins stated.
