“The City of Jerseyville is exploring options for enhancing waste management services for residents while reducing the cost of service,” according to the city’s website.
Since last summer, the city has been exploring the possibility of switching to an exclusive waste management company to handle city-wide curbside pickup of trash while adding options for recycling and yard waste collection. The city submitted requests for bid proposals (RFPs) on June 27, 2025 to multiple contractors and has received three responses from Community Sanitation, GFL Environmental, and Republic Services.
A public information meeting is set for next Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in Jerseyville City Hall, located at 115 E. Prarie St., where city officials will give more information about the proposals received and give community members an opportunity to share their views on the subject.
“Residents currently report paying $30–$45 per month for curbside trash service,” according to a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on the city’s website. “The potential savings could reduce costs by $8–$20 per month per submitted bids, while adding curbside bulk-item pickup and single-stream recycling collection.”
If the city switches to an exclusive waste management contract, all single-family and multi-family households participating in curbside trash collection would be required to switch to the city’s exclusively selected hauler. The city’s selected hauler would then bill residents directly and handle collections.
Households using a waste management company other than the city’s exclusive hauler would be issued an ordinance violation if the city enters into an exclusive trash pickup contract. Businesses would not have to make any changes to their dumpsters or waste management contracts, as this would be a residential-only program.
Major changes would be made to Jerseyville dump operations if city officials choose an exclusive hauler for city-wide curbside trash pickup. Current permit holders would be allowed to use the dump with their existing stickers until April 30, 2026 before the new exclusive curbside service would start on May 1, 2026. After that point, the city dump site would only be used for occasional city-wide cleanup efforts or related uses.
Notably, the city is not required to accept any of these proposals or switch to an exclusive contract for city-wide trash pickup. If city officials choose not to select any of the proposed contractors, operations will continue as usual at the city dump site, but dump sticker fees would increase substantially. The city dump is currently operating at a monetary loss; for the city to “break even,” current estimates indicate dump sticker fees would increase from $175 to over $230 annually.
