GODFREY - Don Ehrman at Riverbend Investment Management wants people to know they have options when it comes to planning their financial future.

Ehrman explained that his business, located in Godfrey, is focused on helping people manage their finances. He works with clients to plan for retirement and make investments that will support them long-term. To do so, he makes an effort to get to know his neighbors and engage with the community.

“Everybody is different. Everybody’s personal circumstances are different,” Ehrman said. “The process that we go through is just trying to get to know people and, just as important, what’s important to them.”

As a financial consultant, Ehrman advises his clients and helps them decide what they need to do to prepare for the future. He works closely with clients to learn more about their priorities and goals.

He noted that almost everyone wants to talk about retirement. Ehrman advises people to think about retirement as early as possible, though he added that “it’s never too early and it’s never too late” to start saving. Even $50 a month toward your retirement account can make a big difference, especially as most employers offer retirement plans.

As the world shifts, there are a few basic principles that Ehrman has stuck to throughout his 34-year career.

“There’s no secret sauce here,” he said. “Start early, spend less, contribute more, be diversified in your approach, be wary of the latest hot trend. If 1,000 people are talking about it, you’re probably a little late to the party.”

When it comes to trends like cryptocurrency, Ehrman urges caution. He advises clients to research everything carefully before they put money on the table.

“Always be wary. Ask lots of questions,” he said. “The crypto space, it’s exploded. There’s so many different areas of it. But here’s one thing that most of that space has in common that makes me a little hesitant, and that is that a lot of it is unregulated. It’s still so new. The regulators still haven’t quite figured out how we can make this an even playing field for everyone and not to where it’s just benefitting a small segment of participation. So tread lightly, tread carefully, and do your homework.”

Ehrman lives and works in the community, so it’s important for him to give back wherever he can. He shared his gratitude for organizations like the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council, which make it easier for him to connect with fellow business owners and community members.

Ehrman pointed out that the NAGBC allows people to come together and support one another, no matter what business they’re running. It also encourages people to share their ideas and lift the community together. These principles guide the council, and they’re equally important to businesses like Riverbend Investment Management.

“When I think of the council, I think of two words. I think of fellowship and I think of community,” Ehrman added. “We all are a part of this.”
