The game, held at the Lady Spartan Classic tournament, featured a slow start for Calhoun, but the team caught fire and improved its scoring in the second and fourth quarters to secure the win.
Calhoun (7-11) struggled offensively early on, scoring just three points in the first quarter. However, the team rallied to put up 12 points in the second quarter and 13 in the fourth. Western scored 11 points in the opening quarter but was limited to single-digit scoring in the following periods.
Key contributors for Calhoun included Addi Ross and Layla Longnecker with eight points each, Sadie Kiel also added eight, Lizzy Hagen scored six, and Stella Gress chipped in five. Calhoun made 10 two-point field goals, three three-pointers, and converted six of eight free throws, while committing 14 fouls.
Western’s leading scorer was Sophie Rennecker with eight points, followed by Alysa Bareis and Alexis McMullen with five points each. Paisley Patterson scored three, and Mya Sheppard two. The team made five two-point field goals, two three-pointers, and seven of 11 free throws, with 11 fouls called against them.
Calhoun’s victory sets up a semifinal matchup with West Central later in the tournament.
