Granite City's Heidtman and Steel and Pipe Launch Joint Steel Venture

GRANITE CITY — Heidtman Steel Products Incorporated and Steel and Pipe Supply Co., Inc. announced the formation of a joint venture, Granite City Processing LLC, effective Jan. 1, 2026. The new partnership will operate from the former Heidtman Steel facility in Granite City, combining resources to enhance steel processing capabilities and customer service across the region.

Granite City Processing will function as a toll operation, utilizing existing equipment including a coil pickle line capable of handling widths up to 72 inches and gauges up to 0.500 inches, three slitters for gauges between 0.050 and 0.500 inches, and two cut-to-length lines processing coils from 0.109 to 0.500 inches. Plans are underway to expand the facility’s offerings with the addition of a light-gauge slitter in 2026 and a 5/8-inch stretcher-leveling cut-to-length line, expected to be completed by early 2027.

John Bates Junior, president and CEO of Heidtman Steel Products, said the partnership will unlock new opportunities and deliver value to customers while maintaining the company’s family business roots. “We are thrilled to partner with Steel and Pipe Supply in this exciting venture,” Bates said.

Clint Johns, co-president of Steel and Pipe Supply, described the joint venture as a significant milestone. “Our shared vision and collaborative spirit will drive incremental value and create a lasting impact,” he said.

Steel and Pipe Supply Co., Inc., established in 1933 and a subsidiary of SPS Companies, Inc., is a privately held carbon steel distributor with extensive coil processing and logistics capabilities. Both companies have longstanding reputations for customer dedication and strategic growth within the steel industry.
