On Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, the Board recognized three exceptional students who work hard to succeed every day. Chase Vaughn was named the Alton Middle School Optimist Student of the Month, while Malaysia Gilleylen was recognized as the Optimist Student of the Month for Eunice Smith Elementary School. December’s Optimist Student, Avacyn Ishmael, was also recognized from Gilson Brown Elementary.
Dr. Brian Saenz, principal of Alton Middle School, shared that Vaughn is “a true leader in the classroom” who is “always willing to help others and brings a positive attitude to school each day.” As an eighth grade student, Vaughn serves as the classroom ambassador and supports his teachers and peers.
“Mr. Chase Vaughn embodies the qualities we strive to instill in all middle school students: hard work, kindness, and a commitment to continuous improvement,” Saenz said. “Chase’s kind heart and welcoming personality make him someone who never hesitates to help a peer in need.”
Saenz commended Vaughn for his natural leadership ability. Optimist Students of the Month receive a $25 gift card and can choose where to donate an additional $25. Vaughn chose to donate his $25 to the Alton Boys and Girls Club.

Christina Coy, principal of Eunice Smith Elementary School, introduced second grader Gilleylen as a “kind, helpful and encouraging” student. She shared that Gilleylen reads above her reading level and has excelled on reading and math assessments. She is also a member of the Green Team and has received recognition for her academics and attitude.
“She always tries her best, even when something is hard. When she makes a mistake, she does not give up, and she keeps trying with a smile,” Coy added. “Her happy attitude and belief that she can learn and grow make her a wonderful role model and a great choice for this award.”
Gilleylen chose to donate her $25 to 5A’s Animal Shelter. She shared that she loves math and mistakes only encourage her to “try harder.”

Joanne Curvey, principal of Gilson Brown Elementary, explained that Ishmael is a first grader who “truly embodies all of the tenets of the Optimist group.” Curvey said she wanted Ishmael to receive this award since she was a kindergartener because she “stands out among her peers.”
“She’s always looking on the bright side of things. She’s always willing to help others, and she’s always happy for others’ achievements,” Curvey shared. “She has a genuine smile and a kind warmth that just radiates from her.”
Ishmael wants to become an artist when she grows up. She chose to donate her $25 to the Alton Boys and Girls Club.
