
CARROLLTON - Six teams won their opening round games on Saturday, while the top two seeds received byes into the championship quarterfinals on the first day of the 51st Carrollton Lady Hawk Invitational girls basketball tournament at the Carrollton gym.

The top two seeds - Liberty and the host Hawks - received first round byes, while the games that were played, Marquette Catholic won over Beardstown 54-31, Granite City defeated Raymond Lincolnwood 44-25, it was Father McGivney Catholic winning over Greenfield Northwestern 52-24, Jersey defeated Hardin Calhoun 53-28, Nokomis defeated Madison 86-21, and Winchester West Central defeated Roxana 46-40.
In the Explorers' win over Beardstown, Caylee Rhodes led Marquette with 15 points, while both Laila Davis and Allie Weiner added 10 points each.
In the Warriors' win over the Lancers, Malone Grady led Granite with 17 points, while Taliyah Sykes added 11 points.
The Griffins led Greenfield at the half 29-11 in going on to the win. Zoe Oller led McGivney with 13 points, while both Peyton Ellis and Elle Willenborg scored eight points each.


In the Jersey-Calhoun game, the Panthers led the Warriors at halftime 28-13, then outscored the Warriors 25-15 to take the win. Meredith Gray led Jersey with 17 points, while Cate Breden added 14 points. Bradyn Lammy led Calhoun with 17 points, while Anna Eberlin came up with four points.
The Redskins took their big win over the Trojans, while in the game between the Cougars and the Shells, West Central led Roxana at halftime 22-20, and held off Roxana to advance. Daisy Daugherty led the Shells with 24 points, while both Ava Cherry and Leah Newton added six points each.
The Carrollton tournament is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, weather permitting, with Greenfield meeting Lincolnwood at 5 p.m., Roxana playing Madison at 6:30 p.m., and Marquette against Liberty at 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, Granite City faces Father McGivney at 5 p.m., West Central faces Nokomis at 6:30 p.m., and Jersey plays Carrollton at 8 p.m.
The final is set for Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
