Since the announcement on Jan. 26, union leaders have been seeking clarification from the company regarding the status of employees’ wages, benefits, and the duration of any guarantees related to pay, healthcare, and other contractual obligations. Hall said the company has not yet provided clear or definitive answers on these matters.
“Union leadership has been engaged daily in efforts to obtain accurate information and to hold the company accountable for its responsibilities to the workforce,” Hall said.
Alton Mayor David Goins expressed his sadness and surprise over the closure during remarks on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026.
“My heart goes out to families who got that notice,” he said. Goins noted the impact extends beyond the city limits, affecting the broader region, as many employees at Alton Steel come from outside Alton.
“We will assist in any way we can, and it does affect people not only in Alton but throughout the region," he said.
Goins added that he is unaware of any current plans to restart the mill in Alton, but he hopes to help find solutions to get people back to work.
Hall and the union remain committed to advocating for members and pledged to share verified information with both the membership and the public as it becomes available.
“We appreciate the patience and solidarity shown during this difficult time and will continue to fight for fair treatment and answers,” Hall said.
