Twichell, who took over as head coach of the Warriors before the 2024-2025 season, replaced Greg Vaughn, who stepped down after three seasons. With 23 years of head coaching experience across both boys and girls basketball, Twichell has brought a wealth of expertise to the program. His overall head coaching record stands at 338-282.
“I am really, really happy for the girls,” Twichell said last week about the Granite City team’s success. “Things have been down for a long time at Granite City, and to come out with 16 wins is incredible. I have really enjoyed the smiles on their faces!”
Before joining Granite City, Twichell coached girls basketball at Jersey for two seasons (2021-23), compiling a 27-35 record. His prior head coaching stops include Alton Marquette (boys), Fort Zumwalt West (boys), Duchesne (girls), and East Alton-Wood River (boys).
Among his accolades, Twichell was named Illinois Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in 1996 and earned multiple IAABO Coach of the Year honors.
Granite City’s strong performance this season marks a significant turnaround for a program that had struggled in recent years.
Twichell’s leadership has helped the Warriors regain confidence and competitiveness on the court.
