ALTON – The City of Alton is requesting $1.6 million in federal funding to cover the next two phases of ongoing street improvements on Milton Road.

The project’s first phase consisted of several street improvements spanning a 0.32-mile section of Milton Road from Worden Avenue to Edgewood Avenue, for which $11,000 was approved in 2024.

Phase 2 will extend these Milton Road improvements for another 0.32 miles from Edgewood to Hillcrest Avenues before extending 0.25 miles further during Phase 3 from Hillcrest Avenue to 100 feet south of Robert Avenue.

Council members approved allocating $8,000 in Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds to cover the application fees to seek federal funding for both project phases. This amount represents 0.5% of the federal funding requested, which totals $1.6 million.

According to the resolution, The City of Alton will apply to the East-West Gateway Council of Governments for funding under the federal Surface Transportation Program (STP). If no amount is awarded, the city’s $8,000 application fee will be refunded.
