FCCLA, formerly known as Future Homemakers of America, focuses on addressing youth concerns such as parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, sustainability, nutrition, fitness, teen violence, and career preparation. The organization helps students develop leadership skills and life skills including planning, goal setting, problem-solving, decision making, and interpersonal communication.

At Alton High School, FCCLA members emphasize leadership development, team building, and community service.

FCCLA Vice President Carter Stahl said the fundraiser is critical to sustaining these efforts.

“One of our main goals are community service, but it can be costly,” Stahl said. “Transporting students, buying supplies and materials adds up. There are also costs involved with joining FCCLA. There are chapter, state, and national dues along with other expenses members have to pay, and not everyone can afford these expenses on top of everything else, and we don’t like to turn anyone away.”

The trivia night will feature a movie theme tied to the chapter’s current theme, “Finding Your Leading Role with FCCLA.” Students are organizing decorations, silent auction items, the venue setup, and the trivia questions. “We know it’s going to be a fun filled night for everyone,” Stahl said.

Teams of up to eight people can register for $100. Participants are encouraged to bring their own snacks; soft drinks will be available for purchase. A silent auction will also be held, with all proceeds going directly to support FCCLA students and their community service activities.
