Fifth Annual Black History Month Exhibit in Alton: A Celebration of Heritage and Community

ALTON – Sheila Goins is proud to announce the opening of its fifth annual Black History Month exhibit, which will take place from February 9 through the end of the month. The exhibit will be open to the public from 8 AM to 5 PM, mirroring the hours of Alton City Hall.

This year, First Lady Sheila Goins is thrilled to present an enriching showcase of the profound contributions made by African-American pioneers in Alton, Illinois. “I am especially excited to share the robust history of our local heroes whose legacies have shaped our community,” Goins stated.

The exhibit promises a vibrant collection of stories, photographs, historical posters, and colorful displays celebrating African heritage. A highlight of this year’s presentation will be dedicated to the inspiring Alton Heritage Pilgrimage Tour 2025, during which Sheila Goins and a group of 15 local residents traveled to Ghana in October 2025. The exhibit will feature photographs from significant locations visited during the tour, including the Slave River, Cape Coast Castle, and a visit to the Volta Region for a Ghanaian heritage culture naming ceremony, along with many more impactful experiences.

“This journey to the motherland was incredibly emotional but filled with joy as we connected with our African roots,” Sheila Goins reflected. “We are excited to share our experiences and the rich history of our heritage with the community.”

We warmly invite families, friends, schools, and community groups to visit the exhibit in the lobby of Alton City Hall. This is an opportunity to engage with Black history and celebrate the enduring spirit of our community.
