Staunton Coach Ty Laux.EDWARDSVILLE — With the postseason days away, Staunton’s Bulldogs are heading toward the Class 2A playoffs at 20-3, and coach Ty Laux says the focus is on closing games better as the regular season winds down.

“We’ve just got to learn to finish a little better,” Laux said. “We have to just finish down the stretch. We had the ball near the end, and had a couple of turnovers at the end, but we’re getting better. We’re getting close. We’ve had a couple of tough losses here, lately, but we’re getting real close to where we need to be to win the regionals.”

Laux said his goal over the final stretch is steady improvement, starting in practice and carrying into each remaining game.

“During the next three weeks, we want just to keep getting better,” Laux said. “Every day in practice, we want to just keep getting better, and keep getting better every game, keep competing, and try to play our best basketball when we go into the regional.”

Asked about the possibility of a deep postseason run, Laux said the team still has work to do before the playoffs arrive.

“Well, we hope so,” Laux said. “It’s never easy, and we’ve still got a lot of basketball left. We still have five conference season games left, and we still have Granite City, so we still have a lot of basketball before then. We are just going to try to keep getting better.”

Staunton plays at home against Gillespie on Friday, Feb. 6, then hosts Columbia at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. The Bulldogs travel to rival Southwestern on Feb. 10, play at Granite City on Feb. 12, and host Litchfield on Feb. 13.

Staunton travels to Greenville on Feb. 17 and closes the regular season Feb. 19 against Hillsboro.
