WOOD RIVER - Ethan Barrett, a senior at East Alton-Wood River, is being recognized for bowling after four years in the sport that culminated in his highest high school game, a 244.
Barrett said his progress came through “practice and more practice,” adding that “with hard work, I got to a point where I felt that I was at the best point in my high school career, it took me to my senior year, but I got it.”

He credited coaches Garry Herron and Gary Quigley, saying, “With my coaches' help and encouragement from my teammates, I was able to bowl my highest game, a 244.”
Barrett is a Midwest Members Credit Union Male Athlete Of The Month for the Oilers.
Barrett also pointed to the environment around the program as a key factor in his development.
“I have been bowling for about four years now, and what I like most about it is the way that I was coached, I was treated like a friend, and that's what drove me to be better,” he said.
He said his family has played an important role in his success.
“My mom and dad have always been there for me and supportive, they have always put me up when I'm down,” Barrett said.
Barrett said his experience in sports has shaped him beyond competition.
“My involvement with sports has been very beneficial to my change, with being on a level with my coaches to where they don't feel like coaches, they are people I can trust and talk to them about anything, and it's helping me grow my speaking skills,” he said.
He added that being around teammates mattered personally as well: “Also, being around peers and friends, I had the opportunity to play with two of my best friends throughout the year, and it helped us not drift apart.”
Outside of bowling, Barrett said he is involved in theater and enjoys doing puzzles.
Looking ahead, Barrett said he hopes to continue bowling.
In the classroom, Barrett said he has maintained a strong academic standing.
“Almost all four years I have been in Gold Level Renaissance, and I have kept my GPA way above what my standard was for me,” he said.
He added that he was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior and said he is interested in IT and is “on the course to get my certificate.”
