Patients with one or more risk factors are encouraged to undergo this test every three to five years if the initial score is zero or very low. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), obesity, unhealthy cholesterol levels, a family history of heart disease, lack of physical activity, and tobacco use or exposure to tobacco smoke.

“February is Heart Month, making it a great time to remind our loved ones about the risks of heart disease, the nation’s leading cause of death,” said Fred Sanscoucie, radiology director at OSF Saint Anthony’s. “This simple screening can be an important addition to a patient’s overall health plan, as it may help prevent a heart attack or provide doctors with a roadmap for preventing heart disease,”

Scheduling the test is easy with two options: with a physician’s order or by contacting Scheduling directly at (618)-474-4606. The scan takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
