Tigers Win Two Championships, Send Six To State, Kahoks Send All Four Wrestlers To State, Edwardsville Wins IHSA Girls Wrestling Sectional

Edwardsville captures two championships and advances six wrestlers to state finals, while Collinsville qualifies all four participants at the Virden sectional tournament.

VIRDEN - Edwardsville took two championships and will send six wrestlers to the state finals, while Collinsville will send all four of its wrestlers to state as the Tigers won the IHSA girls wrestling sectional over the weekend at North Mac High School's gym in Virden.

The Tigers won the tournament with 132 points, with the Kahoks coming in second with 77.5 points, in third place was Urbana with 68 points, Granite City was fourth with 56.4 points, and Roxana rounded out the top five with 54.5 points. Cahokia placed sixth with 53 points. Belleville West was 10th with 40.5 points, Triad came in 13rth with 34 points, Waterloo was 15th at 30.5 points, Civic Memorial and Mascouah tied for 26th with 23 points each, Freeburg came in 28th with 22 points, Belleville Althoff Catholic and O'Fallon ended in a tie with Stanford Olympia for 29th with 21 points apiece, Alton was 36th with 17 points, Belleville East came in 38th with 14 points, East St. Louis finished in a tie for 46th with Effingham with eight points each, HIghland, Mt. Carmel, and Mattoon al tied for 48th with seven points each, Carlinville and Johnston City tied for 57th with three points each, and both Jersey, Jacksonville Illinois School for the Deaf, and Payson Seymour all failed to score.

The top four wrestlers in each class qualified for the state finals in two weeks, and for the Redbirds, Aryanna Jones will be going to state at 125 pounds by finished second, losing the final to Yariah Shaw of Danville by fall at 1:23, while Baleigh Self will go to state for the Crusaders with a third place finish at 115 pounds, winning her final bout over Kate Wochner of Fithian Oakwood by fail at 4:27. Lamia Irby will go to state for the Lancers at 130 pounds, taking a 14-7 win over Te'Aja Young of Cahokia to place third. The Maroons will send two wrestlers to state, with Brooke Bellhorn finishing second at 190 pounds, losing the final to Victoria White of Edwardsville by medical forfeit, and Riley Weems finishing fourth at 110 pounds, losing her final match to the Tigers' Adleigh DeWerff by fall at 3:14.

Civic Memorial will have no wrestlers going to state, while Cahokia will have Young going to state at 130 pounds, and Janiyah Holman going to sate with a third place finish at 170 pounds, winning her final match over Iy'Jah Grant of Champaign Central by default 6-2 at 3:19. Carlinville failed to advance its wrestler, Abbie Heusing, to state at 235 pounds, while the Kahoks will be sending al four of their wrestlers to the state finals, starting with Addyson Bailey at 135 pounds, who finished second, and lost the final to Jacee Mardirosian of Carterville 14-6, with Ivana Torres placing second at 110 pounds, losing the final to Chloe Skiles of Roxana by fall at 1:33. Leann Cory finished fourth at 145 pounds, losing her final bout to Macee Hammond of Robinson by medical forfeit, and Londyn Long qualified for state with a third place finish at 125 pounds, taking her final match over Olive Lindhorst of Edwardsville by fall at 55 seconds.

East St. Louis' only wrestler, Jariyah Powell at 140 pounds, did not qualify for state, while Edwardsville will have DeWerff going to state at 110 pounds, while Allie Chong finished second at 120 pounds, losing the final to Alauni Muex of Marion 9-2, Emma Rogers won the 105-pound division to go to state, winning over Phoenix Criss of Springfield by technical superiority 17-0 at 4:00, Genevieve Dykstra finished second at 115 pounds, losing the final to Rilynn Younker of Litchfield 12-1, Lindhorst placed fourth at 125 pounds, and White won the 190-pound division.

Freeburg's only wrestler, Grace Stratton, finished second at 155 pounds, losing the final to Taylor Owens of Fithian Oakwood by default 10-5 at 2:51, with Granite sending two wrestlers to state, Audrey Barnes at 140 pounds finishing second, and losing the final to Ricky Ivy of Urbana by fall at 1:58, while Demi Barnes won the title at 170 pounds, winning the final over Kira Thompson of O'Fallon by fall at 1:50. Highland's only wrestler, Sophie Elkins at 140 pounds, couldn't qualify for state, while Skyler Howell, wrestling at 155 pounds for Jersey, also failed to qualify.

Jhayla Lawson, going at 100 pounds, was the only Mascoutah wrestler to qualify for state with a fourth-place finish, losing the third-place bout to Kadi Wilbern of Chatham Glenwood by fall at 18 seconds, while Thompson finished second at 170 pounds for the Panthers. Piasa Southwestern's only wrestler, Mikayla Means at 235 pounds, did not qualify, while Skiles went through to state for the Shells at 120 pounds, with Madelyn Murphy winning the 100-pound division to qualify, winning the final over Chloe Collins of Stanford Olympia 14-2. Kaitlin Wood will represent the Knights at state with a third place finish at 155 pounds, winning her final match over Maddie Wells of St. Joseph-Ogden by fall at 2:25. Both of Waterloo's wrestlers qualified for state, with Izabel McBride finishing fourth at 190 pounds, losing her final bout to Addison Briggs of Westville by fall at 1:33, and Madelyn Edker placed third at 135 pounds, winning her final match over Tamya Terry of Urbana 6-5.

The qualifiers will compete for the state championships in the finals Feb. 27-28 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
