ALTON – A sex offender from Alton faces new felony charges after allegedly fleeing from police in a high-speed vehicle chase and on foot among other offenses.

Dallas M. Cook, 47, of the 3000 block of Glenwood Avenue in Alton, was charged on Feb. 9, 2026 with his second subsequent offense of unlawful failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 2 felony.

Cook was also charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer (both Class 4 felonies), unlawful possession of methamphetamine (a Class 3 felony), and resisting a peace officer (a Class A misdemeanor).

On Feb. 6, 2026, Cook allegedly failed to register with the Alton Chief of Police as a sex offender after previously being convicted of the same offense in 2023 in Warren County, Missouri. He is additionally accused of knowingly attempting to flee from a police officer who signaled for him to stop the vehicle he was driving, reportedly reaching speeds of at least 21 miles per hour over the legal speed limit and ignoring multiple traffic control devices.

Cook is also accused of resisting arrest by fleeing from the same officer on foot and unlawfully possessing less than five grams of methamphetamine on the same date.

A petition to deny Cook’s pretrial release from custody was filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. According to the petition, Cook was identified as the driver of a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop, “driving 78 mph in a 30 mph zone and ignoring multiple traffic control devices.”

“Defendant crashed into a retaining wall, then fled on foot, but was apprehended,” the petition states. “He was found to have meth on his person, and also had failed to register as a sex offender.”

The state’s petition was later granted, with a Detention Order filed in this case alleging that Cook committed these latest offenses while on pretrial release in a domestic violence case from 2025.

The Detention Order further states Cook has failed to comply with the Sex Offender Registration Act since 2017. As of this writing, Cook’s name still does not appear listed in the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry.

The Alton Police Department presented the latest case against Cook, who currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
