Cox received the Award of Excellence.

“Being named to the 2026 Those Who Excel list honestly leaves me feeling incredibly grateful and humbled,” said Cox. “It means so much to know that the students, colleagues, and families who’ve been part of my journey see the heart I’ve put into my work. It also inspires me to keep giving my all to the students and community that I love so much.”

Cox is in her 25th year with District #7. She began her career as a second-grade teacher at Glen Carbon Elementary. After six years in that role, she taught Spanish at the 3–5 level for 13 years. Cox also spent one year teaching fifth grade and two years teaching 3–5 technology before assuming her current position prior to the 2023–24 school year.

“Through her steadfast dedication to student empowerment and educational equity, Shanyra Cox has become an essential leader in District #7,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Allen Duncan. “Her work as a technology coach, administrative intern, and DEI advocate embodies our mission to help every student achieve personal success.”

The annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate outstanding classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities. More information about the application process and awards can be found in ISBE’s Overview of Awards. ISBE will celebrate the awardees at a banquet on April 18.
