LEBANON - Defending MVCHA Class 2A champion Edwardsville used two goals from Blake Huneke to take an early edge in the championship series.
Edwardsville beat Belleville 3-1 in Game 1 of the MVCHA Class 2A championship series at the McKendree Metro Rec-Plex in O’Fallon. Game 2 is set for Thursday night at the RP Lumber Center in Edwardsville, with a faceoff at 8 p.m.
Belleville struck first when Grant Huber scored 31 seconds into the second period, assisted by Arturs Zile, for a 1-0 lead.
Edwardsville answered later in the period as Huneke tied it at 7:59, assisted by Ian Bowers.
The Tigers took the lead in the third period when Michael Edwards scored at 5:10, assisted by Zachary Johnson, to make it 2-1. Huneke added an insurance goal at 7:33 of the third, assisted by Jackson Ruff, to seal the 3-1 win.
Edwardsville outshot Belleville 30-25.
Game two is set for Thursday night at the RP Lumber Center in Edwardsville, with the face-off at 8 p.m.
