Fire Rips Through East Alton Strip Mall Overnight

A major blaze erupted early Tuesday at a strip mall on Berkshire Boulevard, causing extensive damage to businesses including a Chinese restaurant and Dollar General.

EAST ALTON — Firefighters battled a large overnight blaze that broke out around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilshire Village strip mall in the 600 block of Berkshire Boulevard.

The East Alton Fire Department responded to the scene and was assisted by multiple surrounding departments as crews worked to contain heavy flames that tore through a Chinese restaurant and several vacant storefronts.

Fire officials said a Dollar General located in the strip mall sustained smoke and water damage as crews worked to bring the fire under control.

A stretch of Berkshire Boulevard was shut down for several hours overnight while firefighters battled the blaze. Crews remained on scene into the morning monitoring hot spots.

The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

No injuries have been reported.
