Freer Auto Body was started in 1991, fulfilling the dream of David Freer, then an 18-year-old graduate of Ranken Technical College. A meager beginning included a 30 x 50 building. Today, the company has over 17,000 square feet of shop space with the most modern equipment and 20 employees in the shop and five in the office.

It has always been a family business with David, Tim, Margaret, and Mike working countless hours to ensure its success. David passed away in 2008 and Tim assumed the role of president. It was also at that time Carrie (Tim’s wife) joined the company full time.

In addition to operating a very successful business, the Freers’ strive to be community-oriented. They have received numerous recognitions, including:

  • Captains of the Riverbend Award in 2004 and 2013.
  • Small business of the month in 1995, 2003, 2011, 2016 and 2023 (first business to win five times).
  • Received the Golden Leaf Award from the Godfrey Women’s Club in 2011.
  • Voted BEST in Madison County for more than 10 years running.
  • In 1999 Margaret received the YMCA “Women of Distinction” Award.
  • 2011 Tim was a recipient of the first 20 Under Forty Awards.

The Freers have never forgotten their meager beginnings and they attribute success not only to hard work but to a community which has embraced and supported them.

In giving back to the community, they have;

  • Painted fire trucks, Salvation Army bells, rescue boats and water buggies.
  • Provided plaques and other items to support community organizations.
  • Serve on various community boards.
  • Held blood drives and hosted countless fundraisers for our local charities.

While their contributions are many, they are most grateful for the ability to give. As a closely knit family business, they are very connected to the community. They feel the community has made them successful and they feel it is a civic duty to give back.

A major event is when daughters/granddaughters Taylor and Lily host the “Christmas in July” and “Cookies and Cocoa” in December. Last July, the girls raised $76,000. They are currently accepting donations for summer getaways for next summer’s “Christmas In July” event.
