Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is a way to adjust hormone levels in your body to mitigate symptoms like chronic fatigue, decrease in muscle mass, low libido, and menopausal symptoms. Mike Babinski, NP at Associated Physicians Group, said that HRT can be a great option for people who feel run down when symptoms aren’t explained by another condition.

“It’s not normal to feel completely worn down all the time,” he said. “Stress can be a big part. We all live very busy, stressful lives. It weighs on us. But a lot of this is not normal. We’re going to correct it, and you’re going to live a healthy, better life.”
Babinski explained that the process of beginning HRT starts with a symptom report and a blood panel. APG can refer you to a lab to get a more intensive blood draw so Babinski can compare your symptoms to your hormone levels.
There are a few methods that people can try when it comes to HRT. Injections, creams and gels are common.
But Babinski advocates for HRT pellets, tiny implants that are inserted in the hip or flank. These pellets release hormones for a few months. He said most of his patients notice results by the second week.
Patients get labs drawn every few weeks so Babinski can monitor your hormone levels and plan for repelleting when the time is right, usually five or six months after the initial implant.
While HRT can sound intimidating, Babinski noted that the results are great with minimal side effects. He pointed out that a lot of people have serious symptoms that aren’t going away until he checks their hormone levels. When his patients learn it’s a hormonal issue, and there are solutions available, it’s usually a big relief.
“I had a 45-year-old guy ask me if he had mono. He slept all the time,” Babinski remembered. “I said, ‘No, you don’t have mono, your testosterone is in the toilet. It’s so low, you feel horrible all day long.’”
Babinski emphasized that HRT isn’t “cookie-cutter,” but dependent on your unique hormonal needs. Most patients experience cognitive, cardiovascular and muscular benefits once they start HRT. He has seen patients lose weight, come off their blood pressure and cholesterol medications, regain their libido, and move past most menopausal symptoms.
Babinski has had a few emotional conversations with patients who say that HRT has changed their lives for the better. He loves working with these patients to help them find relief.
“Their lives have transformed. They feel themselves again,” Babinski said. “It’s remarkable. I’m so glad I got into this after five years. It’s fun medicine. You see the results.”
