CARLYLE - The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated Tuesday morning, March 3, 2026, in Carlyle, Illinois, after Carlyle police responding to a welfare check found a woman dead at a residence, authorities said.

The squad was activated at about 10 a.m. March 3, 2026, at the request of Carlyle Police Chief Herzing, according to Lt. Andrew Pierson, the squad’s public information officer. Carlyle officers had been called at about 8:10 a.m. to a home in the 2100 block of Fairfax Street in Carlyle, in Clinton County, for a welfare check.

Officers ultimately discovered a 41-year-old female, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputy Chief Scott Athmer of the Highland Police Department is serving as deputy commander for the activation. Twenty-six members of the Major Case Squad are working on the case, Pierson said.
