The Village of Bethalto “has no ordinance regulating the use of electric bicycles or electric scooters; therefore, the law would revert to the Illinois State Statute,” according to information shared by Bethalto Village. Bethalto Police also asked that “parents inform, educate, and discuss the safety measures with their children, along with the rules of the roadway when operating a bicycle or scooter on the roadways.”
Under Illinois law regulating low-speed electric scooters, riders must be at least 18 years old. The statute restricts scooter use to roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less and prohibits riding on sidewalks unless local ordinances authorize it. The law also prohibits scooters on state highways.
The law requires scooters to have a working brake. For night riding, scooters must have a white front light and a red rear reflector or light.
Additional rules include allowing only one person per scooter and prohibiting driving under the influence.
Bethalto officials said a flyer was created outlining “the definitions, laws, and age requirements for electric scooters and electric bicycles.”
