It was also the premiere of the Tigers' new turf field, installed in the off-season, and it brought a new dynamic to the complex. The field at Tiger Stadium, where Edwardsville football, soccer, and field hockey play, is a turf field, while the infield portion of the junior varsity baseball field is turf. The junior varsity softball field, lacrosse field, and Tom Pile Field, where the baseball team plays, are still natural grass.

The Tigers open up 0-1, and play at a tournament in Henderson, Tenn., this weekend, going up against Knoxville Farragut at 3 p.m., then playing Murfreesboro, Tenn., Oakland at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Edwardsville plays Murfreesboro Siegel at 9 a.m., then meets two more opponents that will be determined as the tournament goes on, returning home to play Freeburg on St. Patrick's Day at 4:30 p.m.

The Indians broke out on top with three runs in the first inning and three more in the top of the third to go ahead 6-0, with the Tigers scoring their first run of the year in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-1. Both teams scored twice in the fifth inning to give Mascoutah an 8-3 lead, as Edwardsville scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, and were threatening to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell short to give the Indians the 8-5 win.
