BETHALTO – A Bethalto resident faces multiple charges after allegedly lying to police officers after a reported domestic battery.

Joseph A. Yancey, 37, of Bethalto, was charged on Feb. 27, 2026 with one count each of aggravated domestic battery (a Class 2 felony), obstructing justice (a Class 4 felony), and domestic battery (a Class A misdemeanor).
Yancey is accused of knowingly committing an act of domestic battery against a family or household member on Feb. 25, 2026, causing great bodily harm to the victim.
On the same date, Yancey also allegedly knowingly provided false information to officers by telling them there was no adult female present in his apartment at the time of the police investigation, while knowing there was in fact an adult female present in the apartment.
The SIUE Police Department presented the case against Yancey, who was ordered released from custody pending trial with additional conditions. Among the conditions of his release are that he have no contact with and remain at least 500 feet away from the victim in this case while on pretrial release.
Yancey was also ordered to surrender any firearms and/or Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card in his possession to the SIUE Police Department within 24 hours of his release from custody.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
