GRANITE CITY - Preslie Thomas had three hits, Ava Muniz hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning, and freshman pitcher Aubrey Bordoni stuck out 14 in six innings, including six in the first two to stop Granite City threats, as Collinsville won over the Warriors 12-3 in a softball game played Thursday afternoon at the Nelson Hagnauer Sports Complex in Granite.

It was the Warriors' season opener, while Collinsville evened its record at 1-1 on a chilly, almost blustery day that saw the winds blowing in and the temperatures in the low to mid-50s all afternoon.

The story was Bordoni's 14 strikeouts, as she had her pitches and location working throughout the first six innings, snuffing out a Warrior threat in the second, and not allowing Granite to get on track all afternoon.

"She was looking really strong there," said Kahok coach Amy Flowers, "especially in the first two innings, where she struck out he side, had a couple of walks in there in the first inning. But she looked real, real sharp. She's been very good for us so far."

The Kahoks went on an all-out attack in the hitting department, particularly in the fifth inning, where Collinsville scored six times to help put the game out of reach.

"It really was," Flowers said. "The kids, they got together, and they started stringing together some hits, got a couple of stolen bases in there that help us out, and helped us score some runs."

Flowers has many goals and aspirations for her club this spring.

"We've got a whole bunch of goals right now," Flowers said. "I've got a whole goal chart sitting in our press box right now," she said. "The biggest one right now is to try to get to that regional championship. We want to win as many games as we can, and just show everybody how tough we are."

The Kahoks will be a much-improved team this season, as Collinsville seeks to bounce back from an 8-19 season a year ago.

"Absolutely," Flowers said. "The addition of these two freshman pitchers (Bordoni and Payton Smith) has been great, and we've had a lot of other freshmen, step up, We've had Makenna Trice, Ava Demetrulias, and Audrey Laurestein. Ava Muniz hit a bomb today, and that was awesome. We've had a lot of contributions from these young freshmen."

Of course, Flowers is looking ahead to the season, and many good things ahead for Collinsville this season.

"Oh, yeah," Flowers said. "Looking forward to getting this season really rolling, winning some games, getting out there, and having some fun. We're all excited for this season, and looking forward to showing what we can do."

Although the Warriors lost by a big margin, there was a lot to like about Granite's opening day performance, and it could bode well for the team this season, as the Warriors try to recover from a 9-18 campaign in 2025.

"Yes, they played really hard," said Granite head coach Tim Wilson. "We're really proud of them, they're a really young squad. We graduated seven seniors last year, so we have girls that don't have a lot of experience out here."

Granite had a great opportunity in the first, with Riley Carnahan reaching on an error and Chloe Randolph drawing a walk. Both advanced on a wild pitch, but Bordoni fanned both Milyn Roehr and Alexis Ruiz, then walked Autumn Hendrix to load the bases. Isabella Briagas struck out to end the threat.

Trice led off the Collinsville second with a base hit, then courtesy runner Ali Vieluf stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored when Demetrulias reached on an error. Jazz Gomez reached on a scratch single to short, with both runners going to second and third on an error. Demetrulias scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Muniz, to make it 2-0, with Gomez taking third, scoring on a wild pitch. Faith Fairchild drew a walk, stole second, went to third on another wild pitch, and scored on a third wild pitch to make it 4-0 after the second inning.

Muniz hit the first pitch of the fourth over the fence in right center for her first homer of the year to make it 5-0 for the Kahoks, with the Warriors scoring their first run of the season in the home half. With one out, Makayla Adams reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, and reached third when Emily Sahrhage reached on a dropped third strike. Adams scored on a wild pitch, with Sahrhage going to second, making the score 5-1. Bordoni fanned Kaydence Chumley, and Sahrhage was caught stealing third to end the inning.

In the fifth, Collinsville blew open the game, starting with Thomas getting a base hit, and scoring when Bordoni reached on an error in the outfield, Bordoni going to second. Courtesy runner Josie Lasswell was thrown out at third on a Lilly Paarlberg grounder, and with Randolph brought in to pitch, Paarlberg went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a Smith single to load the bases. Demetrulias doubled home two runs, and Berlin Hartmann, who came in as a pinch runner, scored on a ground out by Gomez to make it 9-1. Fairchild then doubled home two more runs to make it 11-1 before Thomas grounded out to end the inning.

Granite got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when, with one out, Carnahan, who hit a lead-off single, scored as Roehr reached on an error, and Ruiz singled home Roehr. Collinsville got their final run in the sixth with two out, when Trice was hit by a pitch, and Hartmann reached on a dropped fly ball, allowing Trice to score to make it 12-3. Bordoni and Smith shut the Warriors down in the final two innings to give the Kahoks the win.

Collinsville's record is all square at 1-1, with the Kahoks playing at Jersey Saturday morning at 11 a.m., then are at Father McGivney Catholic on Monday before returning home on Tuesday to face Roxana, all games starting at 4:30 p.m.
