
COLLINSVILLE - Collinsville's softball team was limited to four hits on the day, while Payton Smith had the Kahoks' only RBI, as Breese Mater Dei Catholic raced out to an 8-1 lead after four innings, and went on to an 11-2 win in the season opener for both clubs at the Collinsville Sports Complex on Tuesday.
The Knights scored twice in both the second and fourth innings, sandwiching a four-run third, while Collinsville scored once in the bottom of the third, to take their 8-1 lead. The Kahoks scored their second run in the bottom of the sixth, while Mater Dei scored their final three runs in the top of the seventh to create the 11-2 final.

Aubrey Bordoni, Audrey Lauenstein, Ava Muniz, and Preslie Thomas had the only hits for the Kahoks, while Smith had the team's only RBI on the day. Smith started inside the circle, and went for three innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits, walking two and striking out three, and was charged with the loss. Bordoni pitched the final four innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on two hits, walking five, and fanning five.
The Knights open the season 1-0, while Collinsville starts 0-1, and play at Granite City on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., play at Jersey Saturday at 11 a.m, and finish their first road swing of the year at Father McGivney Catholic on Mar. 16 in a 4:30 p.m. start.
In two other games played on Tuesday, Red Bud defeated visiting Mascoutah 3-2, and in another season opener, Freeburg won at Belleville East 4-0.
