SOFTBALL

EDWARDSVILLE 4, WESTMORELAND, TENN. 3: In a tournament that was played in Hendersonville, Tenn., Edwardsville took a thriller in a six-inning game on an RBI double by Bryar Ellinger to give the Tigers the win over Westmoreland, Tenn.

Edwardsville scored twice in the first and once in the third to go ahead 3-0, but the Eagles came back wth a run in the fourth and two in the top of the sixth to tie the game, before Ellinger came through with her heroics in the home half of the sixth to win it.

Lily Stone and Ellinger had hits and RBIs for the Tigers, while Sophie Antonini, Audrey De La Torre Cruz, and Savanna Lewis also had hits. Makaela Pippins went all the way inside the circle to gain the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out two.

Westmoreland is now 1-1 on the season.

MURFREESBORO, TENN., SIEGEL 5, EDWARDSVILLE 4: In Edwardsville's second game of the day, a five-inning game, the Tigers and Siegel traded two-run first innings, with the Stars going up with two more in the bottom of the third. Edwardsville promptly tied the game in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs, but Siegel pushed across what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth to pull out the win.

Brooke Burris had two hits and drove in a run for the Tigers, while Ellinger came up with a pair of hits, Stone came up with a hit and two RBIs, Antonini had a hit and an RBI, and Maksine Straub and Maggie Bray each had a hit. Pippins pitched one inning and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits, walking one and striking out none. Sammie Herbeck went two innings in the circle, allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits, walking one and striking out one, and Stella Worman pitched in the fourth, and was charged with the loss, giving up an earned run on two hits, walking one and fanning none.

Both the Stars and Tigers are now 2-4.

In a doubleheader played on Saturday, Belleville East swept Quincy, winning the first game 20-2, then took the nightcap 16-5.

ALTON BOYS SECOND IN SIJHSAA REGIONALS, ALTON GIRLS EIGHTH

Bowling: Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) Regionals at Bowl Haven in Alton - Alton Boys place 2nd as a Team and advance to State next weekend; 3 of Alton’s boys bowlers placed in the top 6. Dawson McCauley - 848, 2nd place, Parker McIntyre - 795, 5th place, Parker Steinkuehler 757, 6th place.

The Alton girls' team placed 8th; Alton Girl Addy McKee placed 7th (597), advancing to state next weekend.

BOYS BASKETBALL

IHSA PLAYOFFS --- STATE FINALS AT STATE FARM CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, CHAMPAIGN-URBANA

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

In Saturday morning's Class 1A final, Chicago Marshall won over Goreville 52-44. The Commandos win the state championship with a record of 24-10, while the Blackcats finish the season 34-5.

In the Class 2A final, Peoria Manuel won the championship with a 50-45 decision over Quincy Notre Dame Catholic. The win gives the Rams a final record of 25-9, while the Raiders finish up at 32-2.

East St. Louis won the Class 3A championship, the second in the program's history, with a 52-45 win over Deerfield. The Flyers finish the season 33-4, while the Warriors conclude at 25-12.

The Class 4A championship went to Chicago Marist Catholic, who won over Lisle Benet Academy Catholic 46-28. The RedFoxes win he title with a record of 33-5, while the Redwings end the season at 36-2.

MONDAY, MARCH 16 PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS ROUNDUP

The entire Metro-East high school sports schedule was postponed on Monday, due to the cold weather that has enveloped the area, and will continue into Tuesday. Games postponed include:

BASEBALL

Valmeyer vs. St. Louis Home School Patriots at CarShield Field, O'Fallon, Mo.

Vandalia at Father McGivney Catholic

Civic Memorial at East Alton-Wood River

Gillespie at Marquette Catholic

GIRLS SOCCER

Alton vs. Breese Mater Dei Catholic

Highland at Greenville

Civic Memorial vs. Murphysboro

Springfield at Belleville West

Waterloo Gibault Catholic at Belleville Althoff Catholic

In addition, a game scheduled for Tuesday --- Collinsville at Granite City --- was postponed on Monday. The make-up date is set for Apr. 17.

Civic Memorial at East Alton-Wood River

Make-up dates for the games, except the Collinsville-Granite City girls soccer match, have yet to be announced. The Collinsville-Granite City matchup has been moved to April 17, 2026.
