2026 Primary Election Results For Greene, Calhoun, Macoupin County

GREENE/CALHOUN/MACOUPIN – Here are the latest unofficial 2026 primary results for Greene, Calhoun, and Macoupin Counties:

GREENE COUNTY

In the race for Greene County Sheriff, Chris Weller defeated Chief Deputy Cale Hoesman and Clark A. Wallis for the Republican nomination and will face Democrat Ben Picou the Nov. 3, 2026 general elections.

Weller secured 55.23% of the vote over Hoesman’s 29.79% and Wallis’s 14.98%, with 100% of precincts reporting unofficial results. Weller will go on to replace current Sheriff Rob McMillen, who chose not to run for re-election.

Incumbent County Treasurer Phil Warren secured his Republican nomination bid in a tight race against challenger Karen J. Kirbach. Warren earned 50.93% of the vote, while Kirbach earned 49.07% of the vote. Warren will face Democrat Kory E. Chapman in November.

Five Republicans competed for four open seats on the Greene County Board. The top four vote tallies went to David Hicks at 25.41%, incumbent Mark Strang at 23.82%, incumbent Earlene Castleberry at 19.72%, and Christina “Tina” Lahr at 18.48%, while Le Esarey failed to secure the party’s nomination with 12.59% of the vote.

Incumbent County Clerk Melissa Schnelt Carter faced no challengers in the primary and will seek re-election unopposed this November.

CALHOUN COUNTY

Chief Deputy Zach Hardin ran unopposed as the Republican nominee to replace Sheriff William Heffington, who announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2025 after serving 19 years as sheriff. He faces no Democrat challenger in the November general elections.

Several incumbent Democrats were also unopposed in seeking their party’s nomination and will remain unopposed heading into November.

Incumbent Democrat Amy Friedel is set to seek re-election unopposed as Calhoun County Clerk, as is incumbent Democrat Lisa Roth for County Treasurer.

Democrat John Mac Shoopman was also unopposed in his bid to fill a vacancy left in the current Supervisor of Assessments office.

MACOUPIN COUNTY

Ryan Dixon secured the Republican nomination for Macoupin County Sheriff and will run unopposed in the November general elections to replace current Sheriff Shawn Kahl, who did not file for re-election.

Dixon received 61.54% of the vote, defeating Quinn Reiher, who received 38.46% of the vote, with 100% of precincts reporting.

Four candidates, including two Republicans and two Democrats, are set to compete this November for the two Macoupin County Board seats up for grabs in District 5.

Republican Larry Schmidt will seek re-election to the board, and three other candidates will compete to replace John Blank, who did not file for re-election. Those three candidates include Republican William Heyen and Democrats Michael Heyen Sr. and Kimberly Rossini.

Several uncontested races were held for the two open County Board seats in each of five other districts, setting the stage for more uncontested races during the November general elections.

Two Republicans, Joe Bateman and incumbent Holly Klausing, are seeking the two open seats in District 1.

In District 3, two incumbent Republicans, Kristi Dunnagan and John Trevino, are both seeking re-election.

Two other incumbent Republicans, Leann Barr and Aaron Stayton, are both seeking re-election in District 6.

For the two District 7 seats, incumbent Republicans James Ibberson and Bernard Kiel are both seeking re-election.

Incumbent Republican Harry Starr and incumbent Democrat Robert “Tony” Wiggins are both seeking re-election in District 8.

Incumbent Democrat Pete Duncan will run unopposed this November for re-election as Macoupin County Clerk. Lillian Amber McGartland will also seek re-election unopposed in November as Macoupin County Treasurer.
